Since I took on this house and all of its projects, many of my female friends have made comments along the lines of "I wouldn't even know where to start" or "how do you know how to do that?". The truth is, most of the time I don't know how to do X project. You learn along the way and feel more comfortable and confident each time.
Are you thinking this is a guys-only zone? Ask nearly any guy if they truly know what they're doing when they start swinging that hammer or drilling into that wall and they'll say no. The trick is, they act like they know what they're doing and it usually turns out. You try, and maybe you screw up, but then you learn for next time. Whether it worked or not, it always makes for a good story.
So I say, "look it up, ladies". If you don't know how to take on a certain project, try to tackle it anyway. There is a world of resources at your fingertips if you know where to look and who to ask. Look it up online (wiki and ehow may be good basic resources), go to your trusted local hardware store and ask an employee, check out related subject books at the library. Ask friends and family members- you might be surprised at what others are skilled in and what resource ideas they have.
Ask for opinions and advice. Provide insight and ideas. Make this your forum to contribute. Most importantly: trust your hammer and have fun!
